I can't say whether the US version is more or less infected but I have only seen mold growth once. After that I boiled every small plastic bottle before adding HHG. Each time I mix up a batch I sterilize the bottles for 5-10 minutes in boiling water and then fill them.

One other precaution I take is that I only use distilled water. Since doing this, I have never had mold growth again...and I keep mine a lot longer than most do...a month or 2 in the fridge and 9 to 12 months in the freezer.

Everyone here NEEDS to spend some time in the UMGF. There is alot of really great info and serious and knowlegeable guys there.

Topaz S and 251 are excellent grades of glue. Far superior to anything else for guitars in my oppinion. Other glues will work, of course. But, there is more to hide glue than just hide glue...not to be complicated or anything, but a little info can go along way and make your life easier and more enjoyable.

I use a hold heet pot, spruce lid holds a tapered 8oz far with a brush. Hair drier...you lean how to use it succesfully and quickly pretty quick. For me it makes the building expericence more enjoyable, not to mention the better tone, heat resistance, repairability and quality that stands behind your name. These are Musical Instruments, afterall right?

There is little working time difference between 192 and 251 or 300. Trust me! Ive been doind this for yonks and the hawaiian instruments I build have much larger seams to glue than roundneck instruments. Just remeber, there is more ways to skin a cat...Double bass, cello?

I use HHG for braces and bridge, for everything else it's fish glue.

The idea that fish glue joints will fall apart as soon as the humidity rises is greatly overstated. I've said it here before, I glued up a variety of different wood samples with fish glues, then put them in the shower room at my house, they went through at least a hundred periods of 100% humidity, and all of the joints held perfectly. A lot of the unglued portions of the wood looked a little bit sorry for itself, but the joints were fine. This was the normal Norland/Lee Valley/Kremer type of fish glue.

Colin,

Why do you use HHG for braces and bridge. Is FG not strong enough for those parts or is it for a different reason?

Because I always have used HHG, but I'd be perfectly happy to use fish glue on everything. Fish joints are just as strong as HHG, both of which are stronger than the wood on destruction tests.

But genereally I use HHG on short open time parts, and fish on longer open time parts.

Great link Tony!!! UMGF is the first forum I ever found on guitars and it's where I first met our good friend John Hall.

I would HIGHLY recommend this very lengthy thread on UMGF for everyone who uses or is thinking of using HHG. Our good friend Grumpy contributes significantly to the discussion and started out with much more patience than we typically see (it may be because they have "the f#@*ing edit button"). As time progressed, however, the button wasn't enough and his patience began to wear thin.

All kidding aside...this is a great thread.
